Harper’s published an amusing review of the whackjob Left Behind series, which is wildly popular among the fundamentalist population of the US. Here’s a snippet from one of the books:
Rayford watched through the binocs as men and women soldiers and horses seemed to explode where they stood. It was as if the very words of the Lord had superheated their blood, causing it to burst through their veins and skin. . . . Their innards and entrails gushed to the desert floor, and as those around them turned to run, they too were slain, their blood pooling and rising in the unforgiving brightness of the glory of Christ.

I actually read the first two and a half of these. They were passed to me by some friends in high school.
Personal capsule review:
Armageddon is something that seems pretty exciting. I mean, whatever your religion, the end of the world involves some crazy shit! And somehow they manage to make the books very boring. I don’t really believe this sort of thing is going to happen so I was reading them as purely fiction and it seemed like they were written for people who read on a 5th grade level. In my opinion, they aren’t really bad because they’re fundamentalist christian propaganda, though that doesn’t earn them any points, to be sure. They’re just very poorly written.
