Novell is putting serious weight behind its new offering, Linux Desktop 10, which it intends to compete head to head with Windows in the corporate desktop environment.

“We are outpacing Microsoft on the desktop. The Linux desktop has been in development for less time than Windows, and we are already surpassing them…”

Novell are also putting their money where their mouth is; over the past year they have been working on transitioning their own 6000 company desktops over to Linux, and have now switched 80% of their users; even with 20% left to go, they have saved $900,000 in licensing fees that they would have had to pay to Microsoft in the same period. The problems that they’ve faced during the process have been fed back into their product, and in turn into the open source community at large.
