An attachment to a bill that supplements funds for Iraq, passed by Congress and now on the president’s desk, would allow the United States once again to keep out and to deport foreign nationals not for their conduct, but for their politics—their ideas, their speech, and the groups with which they associate. Other attachments to the Iraq spending bill have gotten attention, for imposing mandatory standards on the issuance of driver’s licenses [Real ID] and for altering the legal rules for asylum. But the expanded grounds for deportation and exclusion received virtually no discussion.

I am deeply concerned with the implications that the Patriot Act placed on the freedoms of the citizens of the United States. Not only does the REAL ID invade one’s privacy, it limits where and when we can move about the country. Additionally, it affects a citizen’s right to exercise their rights under the 4th Amendment of the US Constitution.
