This is what the drop ceiling looked like from above.
Of course the drop ceiling had to go - it was blocking the skylights, as well as just being hideously ugly - so the first step was to remove all of the tiles. A guy from craigslist was happy to take them all, and will return this weekend for the infrastructure and lighting you see above.
Given the likely asbestos content, and the flaking lead paint from the ceiling above that had accumulated on the top of the tiles, the job required respirators.
