We were expecting the floor under the carpet to be rigid vinyl tiles cemented to a concrete base (as in several of the other units in the same building.) In fact, the vinyl tiles in this space covered a wooden floor. It became obvious that they’d have to go.
I spent the greater part of the weekend on my knees chipping at tiles with a hammer, wrecking bar, and wide blade chisel. Sometimes the tiles would come away in sheets (half a dozen at a time), where the tiles were glued to a felt, but in many places they were cemented directly to the floor, and it was necessary to chip away inch by inch.
This picture shows the majority of the floor with the tiles off. The dark patches you see are felt, which will have to be scraped off (more on that later.)
