Sanding Floor & Ceiling

This weekend we’re moving in; last week we tried to get all of the dust generating activity out of the way. So, sanding galore.

Here’s Kerstin sanding the floors of the living space. (The floors in the main hall will have to wait for a few weeks.) After running over the main part of the floor three times with a drum sander, she moved on to the edge sander.

Here she is with the edge sander. It really is a horrible machine; I used it for a while one evening, and it bucks all over the place.

Meanwhile, I sanded the ceiling. You may remember the peeling paint (containing lead) from earlier pictures; it all had to be sanded. This made a hell of a mess (paint chips all over the floor) and generated a ton of toxic dust which floated in the air. Which reminds me…

This is a filter cover from my respirator, after a week of work (NB, before the sanding.) Its purpose is to catch the dust before it makes its way to the filter, so as to preserve the life of the filter (which is designed to catch microscopic dust, as well as vapors.) Better on the cover than in my lungs.
