KDE Tip of the Day #1

Don’t worry, I won’t be doing this every day. Maybe never again. But I needed a headline, OK?

Here’s how to add a super 37173 quick-browser to your task bar for any arbitrary folder. Do this for your three or four most regularly used folders, and you’ll save yourself a bunch of time.

  • Open konqueror (either double click on a folder, or ALT-F2, type “konqueror”, press enter)
  • Browse to the folder of your choice; alternative: type the folder path into the location bar [NB - tab completion works], press enter
  • Now the location bar should contain the path to your chosen folder, with a little draggable looking icon next to it
  • Drag the icon to your taskbar; drop it on your taskbar
  • From the little menu that pops up, choose “Add As QuickBrowser”
  • Now, try it out — click on the new icon in the taskbar, observe the slickness
  • If you right click on the new icon, and choose “Configure…button”, you can change the folder icon; I find it useful to have each of my quick browsers a different color so that I can remember which is which
