Wordpress Plugin: Simple Smart Links

There used to a freely available wordpress plugin called Smart Links, but it no longer works with recent versions of wordpress. Since I had hundreds of posts using this form of link, I posted on the wordpress forums and got advice on how to write a replacement, which was easy. Here it is for your [...]

New blog – ownharvest.com

I’ve started a new blog, which I’ll be co-authoring with Claire: ownharvest.com. It’ll be about our experiment growing food over the next year.

Why don’t videos always work on this site?

I’ve had some reports (and seen on one friend’s computer) that the embedded videos don’t render for some people on this site. I don’t understand why…if you are one of the affected and know the reason, please let me know. If you don’t know the reason, please post a msg with your OS (“windows XP”), [...]

Site Stats – Browser & OS

No surprises considering the stuff I usually write about…

New Layout

I reorganized the site. Everything seems to be working adequately now, although the AJAX search is flakey in IE. Also, I had to simulate position:fixed using javascript for IE, which is pretty flickery. I will probably put up a notice to let users know why.
So far I’ve been concentrating on layout and functionality; I’m going [...]

DH2.Net Have Awful Customer Service [Software?]

UPDATE 2 – They have made good. This may just have been a series of unfortunate events. However, if you’ve experienced similar bad service with them, please leave a comment on this post.

UPDATE – this may have been a glitch in their customer service software. Colin, their customer service advocate, is working on getting this [...]

Back

The blog’s been on hiatus for a week or so. In the interval, I finished up at my old workplace, went on a road trip, and started in a new position closer to home. More details of each will be pending, probably.

Alexadex – Trade Website Stocks On The Alexa Index

This is awesome –
Players compete for fame and glory by buying and selling shares in sites on the world wide web. The price of a share is set at the site’s daily reach per million, according to alexa.com.

Here’s my Alexa index history – you can see my digg whoring at work. If you’d only sold [...]

Scriptaculous

I just got into Scriptaculous, and I’m loving it. I promise to try not to overdo the visual effects

My Digg.Com Experience

I was curious about how difficult it would be to get onto the front page of digg.com. Turns out that the combination of the words “awesome” and “ubuntu” in the one line story writeup, plus the utility of my DVD backup script, made the grade. Here’s my stats for March — the digg spike is [...]

Better Search

I’ve enhanced the search feature on this blog; I’m using simplesearch, which makes use of mysql’s full text search features. I also tried out Search Reloaded, which provided better results, but broke a couple features on the blog.

New Feature: Peak Oil Media Coverage Database

I spent a couple hours this morning adding a page for the Peak Oil Media Coverage Database. Essentially it is a tweaked out search of my Energy Crisis section, which has been collecting links to media stories about peak oil since April 2005. Give it a try.

How To Search A Single Category On Wordpress

I wanted to make a page to search a single category. Turns out it’s already possible; you just need to tweak wordpress a little.
First, copy your search form and paste it into a new page. It’ll look something like this:
<form id=”searchform” method=”get” action=”/index.php”> <small>Search:</small>
<input type=”text” name=”s” id=”s” size=”25″ class=”nav_textarea”/></form>
Now, go look in the wp_categories table in [...]
